Program Overview
Unicollege offers credit-bearing Summer Study Abroad programs structured as intensive academic sessions for students from U.S., Canadian, European, and other international partner universities, as well as qualified independent participants seeking study within the Italian Higher Education System.
Delivered over approximately 2 to 8 weeks, summer courses carry the same academic credit value as their semester equivalents: 6 ECTS / 3 U.S./Canadian semester credits per standard course. Summer sessions run from May through September, providing an academically equivalent but accelerated pathway for students seeking to complete within a few weeks coursework ordinarily distributed across a full semester.
Academic Structure
Courses are taught in English within Unicollege’s accredited academic framework and follow established university standards, including 45 academic contact hours, defined learning outcomes, formal assessment, and internationally documented credit equivalencies.
While semester courses distribute instruction across a longer academic term, summer courses follow a concentrated schedule and typically meet three to five times per week, depending on the course and session. The academic workload, learning outcomes, and credit value remain equivalent to the corresponding semester format.
Consistent with the Italian university system, international visiting students may select courses across academic disciplines without North American-style course-level restrictions or formal prerequisites, subject to any approval required by the home institution. Coursework may also incorporate field-based academic activities, experiential learning, or credit-bearing internships where provided by the program. Small class sizes, typically corresponding to approximately a 1:11 to 1:13 faculty-to-student ratio, support close academic interaction and individualized faculty engagement.
Enrollment, Duration & Credits
Summer Study Abroad operates on a rolling admissions basis, with applications accepted throughout the year and enrollment normally available until 30 days before the beginning of the selected session, subject to course and housing availability.
The flexible summer calendar allows students to enter the next available session: an application completed in June, for example, may allow participation in a July or August program. A standard course awards 6 ECTS / 3 U.S./Canadian semester credits within a 2- to 8-week period, enabling students to complete the equivalent credit value and academic workload of a semester course within an intensive summer format.
Because Summer Study Abroad programs remain below 90 days, students holding passports eligible for visa-free short stays in the Schengen Area, including U.S. and Canadian citizens, may ordinarily participate without obtaining a long-stay Italian student visa, subject to nationality, immigration status, and applicable entry requirements.
International Learning Environment
Summer students join an academic environment bringing together Italian, European, North American, and other international students within the same university setting. English serves as the common language of instruction and international administration, including coursework, faculty interaction, academic advising, and student support.
The summer format therefore combines accelerated, credit-bearing university study with sustained intercultural engagement: students complete coursework documented through ECTS and U.S./Canadian semester-credit references while studying within an Italian university and alongside peers from different academic and national backgrounds.
