Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)

Cross-border academic collaboration without physical mobility. COIL connects Unicollege students and faculty with partner institutions through shared online learning experiences — developed within university-to-university cooperation and maintaining the rigour expected of higher education programmes.

Three ways COIL can be delivered

Depending on what is agreed with the partner institution, a COIL experience may be structured as one of the following:

Embedded in an existing course

A COIL component is integrated into a running Unicollege or partner-institution course, adding an international collaborative phase without replacing the host curriculum.

Shared academic module

A co-designed module delivered jointly by Unicollege and the partner, with shared syllabus, faculty coordination and aligned learning outcomes.

Thematic short-format

A focused, time-bounded collaboration on a specific theme — ideal for piloting a partnership or addressing a specific disciplinary question.

How a COIL unfolds

Academic activity combines instructional preparation, guided online exchange and collaborative applied work.

1. Faculty-led input

Course themes framed through instructional preparation and comparative discussion.

2. Guided virtual interaction

Structured exchange with students from the partner institution on course-relevant themes.

3. Collaborative applied work

Joint case analysis, comparative reflection, project-based work or co-developed presentations.

Where applicable, COIL initiatives incorporate assessable outputs, reflective assignments and faculty feedback to ensure academic coherence and measurable learning progression.

Institutional framework

As an accredited Italian degree-granting university operating within the Italian Higher Education System, Unicollege develops COIL initiatives within formally defined academic structures.

Clear learning objectives

Each initiative is designed with documented objectives and faculty supervision.

Assessment & credit recognition

Where relevant, documented assessment methods and credit recognition procedures apply.

English medium

English serves as the primary language of instruction, ensuring accessibility across partner institutions.

Areas of collaboration

COIL initiatives can be developed across internationally oriented disciplines. Collaboration may focus on comparative themes, global case studies, intercultural communication, multilingual exchange or jointly supervised project work.

How partnerships are built

COIL projects are developed in coordination with partner universities through a structured planning process.

  1. 1

    Define scope

Academic scope, duration, student profile, digital format and expected outcomes agreed with the partner institution.

  2. 2

    Faculty coordination

Joint faculty alignment on themes, roles and pedagogical approach between Unicollege and partner.

  3. 3

    Syllabus alignment

Learning objectives, content and deliverables mapped across both institutions' curricular frameworks.

  4. 4

    Scheduling & logistics

Scheduling across time zones, digital platforms and session rhythm defined.

  5. 5

    Assessment & deliverables

Where applicable, assessment methods, deliverables and credit recognition formally defined.

Why COIL

For students

Work across cultures and academic systems while remaining within the home institution's academic pathway — no mobility, full international engagement.

For faculty & institutions

A flexible format to internationalise curriculum, strengthen academic partnerships and sustain long-term cooperation through teaching and curriculum development.
